The New York Bariatric group now offers surgery options for adolescent patients between ages of 16 and 18. Over the past two decades there has been a steady increase in the incidence of obesity in children and adolescents. We are already seeing these patients develop type 2 diabetes, hypertension and obstructive sleep apnea. Despite aggressive attempts to control weight with medical means, many patients continue to struggle with their weight and the associated medical diseases.
In Fall 2014, St. Charles Hospital in Port Jefferson, NY was accredited by MBSAQIP as a Comprehensive Center with Adolescent qualifications. After a thorough review, MBSAQIP concluded that St. Charles had all the needed support and infrastructure to address the unique needs of adolescent patients. This program is one of the first offered on Long Island. The program is offering select patients the option to consider laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy as a tool to lose weight and maintain weight loss for life.
The program is structured with a comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach that assesses nutritional needs, evaluates psychosocial support concerns and includes a comprehensive medical evaluation. The program is structured to incorporate parents in each phase of the evaluation and support to insure that the needed lifestyle changes can be accomplished.
New York Bariatric Group is excited to offer this comprehensive program to our younger patients. Please call 800.633.8446 for more information or contact us to make an appointment today. You can also follow this link to register for a free informational seminar.
